Meet Your Candidates – 8 April 2014

In the run-up to the National Elections 2014, a series of Meet the Candidate programs were organized in collaboration with several local and NGO groups in Mumbai.  Police Reforms Watch was able to include police reforms as one of the items in the Citizens Charter of Demands on Better Policing. Public meetings were organized in several localities in which the area candidates were handed the Citizens Charter and asked to endorse it in the presence of the audience. Candidates were free to remove points on which they disagreed. By and large, most candidates signed the Charter. The following events were attended by some PRW team members for a direct interface with candidates:

 6 April 2014: Meet the Candidate program held at IC Hall, Borivali for the North Mumbai Constituency Candidates. Among those who attended the event were sitting Mr Sanjay Nirupam, Indian National Congress, Mr Gopal Shetty, BJP, and Mr Satish Jain, AAP. Over 300 citizens attended this event.

 8 April 2014: Meet the Candidate program held at St. Anthony’s Complex, Vakola. 6 candidates contesting the North Central attended the event and all signed the Charter. This event was attended by over 800 citizens of the local areas.

 12 April 2014: Meet the candidate program at Malad West was attended by over 500 citizens. Mumbai North Candidates Mr. Gopal Shetty, BJP, and Mr. Satish Jain, AAP, attended and signed the Charter.

 13 April 2014: Meet the candidate program at Mahim for the South Central Constituency. Around 300 citizens attended. Mr. Eknath Gaikwad, Congress, and sitting M.P, Mr. Sundar Balakrishnan, AAP, and Adv. Clifford Martis, Independent, addressed and answered queries.

 16 April 2014: Meet the Candidate program at Bandra for the North West Candidates. Three candidates attended this event.
